SSI
/ MEDICAID AND PREPAYING A FUNERAL
If you or a
loved one may be applying for SSI/Medicaid or General Assistance,
prepaying your funeral makes sense financially. You meet with your
funeral director and select the services and merchandise you want
and that meet your budget. The funeral director then sets up an
irrevocable account - meaning the money or insurance can only be
used for funeral expenses.
This means you
can prefund your funeral without affecting SSI/Medicaid and General
Assistance program eligibility. New Jersey law permits SSI/Medicaid
applicants or recipients to use irrevocable insurance, annuities
or trust funds to prefund their funerals. Ask your social worker,
funeral director, or elder law attorney for details.
